Since spring is here and the days are a bit longer, I decided we’d do a new weekly feature, the Weekend Weather Roundup, to take a look at the weather up and down the east coast for the weekend ahead. I’m no meteorologist, but I do know some pretty fancy websites to visit and even have an app or two on my iPhone, so some people say I come close.
For this first week I picked a whole smattering of cities, probably far too many, so leave a comment and tell us which ones we should keep, and which ones you think need to be cut from the list. If you think we should add somewhere we don’t currently have on the list holler and I’ll add it for next time. All our weather info is sourced from the Weather Underground, check it out if you’re not familiar as it’s a killer weather resource.
Let me start off by saying predicting the weather in New England, especially in spring, is a fools game. The professionals can’t get this right 90% of the time. Mark Twain gave an epic speech on just how whacky it is. It just doesn’t make sense. No matter how hard you try, it’s probably wrong. This warning generally applies more to when it’s supposed to be nice out than when it’s supposed to be miserable – but the type of miserable weather might be different from you were expecting (e.g. if it calls for rain, it could easily be snow). You’ve been warned, but you should also be used to this by now.
Bangor, Maine…well, how do I put this lightly? Things look kinda rough in your neck of the woods. While it’s beginning to be spring throughout much of the east coast, you’re going to get the shaft just a bit longer. Friday will be sunny with an afternoon high of 47° so take advantage while you can because at night it’s going to dip down to around 33° and start snowing after midnight. IT’S GOING TO SNOW AT NIGHT. What makes it even worse is you can expect 1 to 3″ of accumulation, so it’s really going to mess your Saturday up. Which isn’t a big deal, because Saturday looks like a 100% chance of rain with a high of 48° and low of 22°, meaning things are probably going to be pretty icy when it’s all said and done. Sunday looks pretty salvageable with a high of 47°, some clouds in the morning but they should clear up and make for a sunny afternoon. At the very least it’ll help dry things off since your week after that looks nice overall…
I thought Bangor might have had it worst in this lineup since it’s so far north, but having just seen Burlington’s weather report I feel a bit worse.
Even Friday afternoon looks like it’ll suck, as it’s going to be overcast all day with a high of 50°. As you head into the evening you can expect rain and ice pellets to start falling from the sky at around 8PM or so, lasting through Saturday morning. Saturday will start off wet and brisk but will become partly cloudy in the afternoon with a high of 46°. Sunday is the day to take advantage of with a high of 52° and sunny, bluebird skies. You’ll finally be able to start evening out that goggle tan as we move into the warmer months, so make sure you get out there and take advantage of it.
Our friends by the bay are going to have an overcast Friday afternoon like much of the rest of New England, with a high of 44° and rain starting around 11PM. Saturday is going to be a mix of les mis in the morning and possibly a salvageable afternoon, with rain and fog running through about 8AM and some partly cloudy skies in the afternoon — high of 56°. Sunday though, sunday should be a beautiful 56° with sunny skies all day – it’s springtime baby!
Most of you don’t care, but this is where Skate The East is based out of since both Henry and I call home most of the year, so it’s going on the list. Deal with it. Friday is going to be overcast with a high of 52° and a 90% chance of rain tonight. Saturday looks pretty nice overall though, a change from the usual and from the rest of New England, with partly cloudy skies and a beautiful high of 56°. Sunday gets even nicer, with sunny skies all day and a high of 60° – no, I didn’t mistype that, it’ll finally be back in the 60’s.
See the Western MA forecast but with Saturday being 58° and Sunday being 61°. No excuses for complaining.
A much less mystic force than those of New England, these might be a bit more accurate. I have absolutely no evidence that that’s a true statement, though…
New York City, NY
Friday looks like it’ll be a washout in the city, but the rest of the weekend should be on point, or as they say, “mad nice.” Saturday will be clear skies and a high of 57°, meaning the roads should be nice and dry by the time everyone wakes up and shakes their hangover (or finishes their Saturday morning cartoons…). Sunday follows the trend of being the nicest day this week with a high of 60° and clear, sunny skies all day. Make sure to pack a jacket if you’re going to be out at night though, as lows will still be dipping into the mid-30’s.
Philly folks see the weather report for NYC by and large. Saturday will be nice and sunny with a high of 57° and Sunday will also feature sunny skies and a beautiful high of 62°.
Washington, DC is lucking out and missing some of the rain that’s headed north. Friday afternoon will have a weekend high of 66° and overcast skies to keep the direct sun off of you. Saturday and Sunday will both be beautiful and sunny, with highs of 61° both days. I can’t lie, sounds about perfect right now. I won’t be as jealous once the humidity hits you guys like a bat though, so enjoy it while it lasts.
I felt like Asheville shouldn’t be the only city in this category, but the options are pretty limited…
The Mecca of the East, Asheville is having a wet and wild Friday, with rain and overcast skies this afternoon making way for a chance of thunderstorms this evening. The high today looks like an extremely comfortable 72° though, so my jealousy is off the charts. Thunderstorm or no thunderstorm, I’d kill to wear shorts and chill on a porch for an afternoon right now, hopefully the AGP boys hold it down for me. Saturday will be sunny and 63° while Sunday will be partly cloudy and 63°.
If no one films down there this weekend I’m going to be very disappointed.
Miami, Miami, Miami…I really just put this on the list to remind the rest of the east coast that our weather sucks, and there’s a city close by that we can all be mad at and envious of. Usually L.A. takes the rap, but let’s just keep it all east coast and channel it down there.
Miami will be fucking perfect on Friday, with a high of 82° and partly cloudy skies. Saturday will also be fucking perfect, with a high of 85° and partly cloudy skies. Know what’s funny? Sunday will also be fucking perfect, with partly cloudy skies AGAIN, and a high of 86°. Did we mention there’ll be a beautiful, calm, cooling ocean breeze every day? Ugh…I can’t keep talking about this…
