And down, and down again. In fact, this is almost two full minutes of the Earthwing guys — Steve Kong, Mac, Andriy Dash, Max, and Ed Nieves — falling over and over again and having some good old fashion fun in between. While we try our best to post our share of super gnarly videos, it’s nice to be reminded every now and then that everyone falls, plus this was too fun not to post.

Earthwing N.L.S.: New Deck Technology and Lineup

I got an e-mail from Earthwing head honcho Brian Petrie giving me the scoop on a new technology and deck line they’re dropping, dubbed N.L.S. (Next Level Shit).

Earthwing N.L.S. decks are made using a crush-welding processes that presses each deck individually (many decks are pressed en masse) in an aluminum mold under heat and pressure. There’s no glue involved and the bond formed is  stronger than the core material itself,  so delams are said to be a thing of the past. The core is then pressed in between layers of what Earthwing calls Unbeleivium, a rigid fibrous material that adds “unusually stiff torsional support” to the deck. What’s all this mean? It means that you get a deck with a 4 ply core that’s just as stiff as a 9 ply deck. Less weight but the same stiffness is better for your skateboarding.

The decks will also feature 360 degree concave that essentially forms a giant bowl on the deck. Brian said they were able to fill one with 96oz of water and sent a picture to prove it. Not the first time we’ve seen ‘cereal bowl concave’ if I remember correctly, but impressive stuff none the less. An added bonus? It’s all made here in the USA and is clean, green and recyclable.

The first two decks featuring the new technology will be the Earthwing N.L.S. 40 and N.L.S. 37. They’re describing the 40 as a symmetrical free ride/park deck while the 37 is a directional speed board with a functional kick tail. Full stats and dimensions are below.

If you want to get your hands on one of these bad boys they’ll be available worldwide in just a few days, on March 1st 2014.

Interview with Ed Nieves

Connor Bewighouse and Tom Leary snagged some time with Earthwing rider and NYC local Ed Neives to chop it up and talk skateboarding, the east coast scene, and what the future holds. Stick around to see what Ed has to say.

Connor and Tom (STE): Start with the basics; name/age/location?

Ed Nieves (EN): Name’s Ed, my best friends call me Shred. I’m 21 as of two weeks ago. Born in Manhattan, grew up in Brooklyn, still living in Brooklyn in the same neighborhood. It’s chill.

STE : Any favorite local spots?

EN: Owl’s Head Skatepark, now that I can actually skate it, is my favorite place to skate, since it’s right down the road from me and has a sweet bowl. Other than that, I like going to Watchtower, Darktower, and “uptown” hills that don’t have names (which we also don’t refer to by street names). Oh, and the skate from Times Square down to Chinatown is a sick route for mobbing through traffic.

STE: Rad. Who is the typical crew at said spots?

EN: When we’re skating bowls, it’s usually my teammates Andriy Dash and (little) Bryan Sheehy, and local favorite Max Gnar is present sometimes. Sliding at hills and stuff? It’s Kong, Tazer, Jerry, Camilo, Monica, Bryan, Max Gnar, Connor, Parker, other Max… Quite the sizable grom squad (not all mentioned here) with Kong and I playing as the parents.

STE: You and steve parents, thats fucking scary haha. Why did you start skating and what or who inspires you to keep skating?

EN: I started skating because I didn’t have many friends, and I sucked at every sport I tried. I mean I sucked at skating too, but I felt like it was acceptable. All the old guys who still skate vert are super inspirational for me. I look at them in their cargo shorts, kneepads and faded Black Flag t shirts doing huge boardslides in the deep end and wonder if when I’m their age I’l be reliving my youth in the same way in skinny jeans and a faded Earthwing shirt slashing frontside grinds.

STE: Fuck yea. Pros and cons to east coast downhill skating: GO!

EN: It’s fucking flat, dude. Generally, you’ve gotta go out of your way to get to a good spot, and the hope the pavement isn’t chipseal. It makes skaters more hungry, I feel, because we have to work for everything, for the most part. This leads to (generally) two types of skaters. The hardcore type that takes every opportunity to steam runs and go as fast as possible, and the ones who don’t try to travel and end up putting their driveway out of laziness. Our events are shitshows 9 times out of 10, but they’re always fun because the northeast homies are a rad, tight bunch.

STE: Great answer, couldnt have said it better myself. Speaking of these shoddily thrown together events, what is your favorite event you’ve ever attended?

EN: Making an “event” page on Facebook is not the same as making an event. Most kids don’t realize that, and they email companies to send product to their “slide jams” which is actually them and their friends skating the local hill. My favorite downhill event has been Central Mass 3, because Mike Girard knows how to do things the right way. It was a rad day of skating and lurking, with a closed road and a perfect freeride hill. My favorite event though, was two weeks ago at the House of Vans, because I met Christian Hosoi and he’s friggin awesome.

STE: Yea I heard bout that! Hosoi is super rad, I’m sure you threw a couple layback grinds at his feet to show him whats good, haha. So who’s favorite downhill skater?

EN: Favorite DH skater is Josh WILD Wright. He’ll charge anything without thinking twice, and slay it harder than anyone who might be there. He’s a stout, strong fellow, and his style is beastly.

STE:  So uhhh, that’s about it…any shout-outs?

EN: Shouts out to Kong for teaching me how to coleman in 2010, Andriy for being Andriy, Babish for the photos, Connor for being the raddest 12 year old, Connor’s mom for feeding me and stuff, Brian Petrie for being awesome and generous, Tazer for never giving up, David Yang for skating with a bar in his leg, and every single Brazlian skater I keep up with on the internet (Marcelo, Rafinha, Diego, the Yuppies, etc) for inspiring me with the seemingly impossible feats you do on skateboards.

Video: 2012 Earthwing Money Cup

There’s a good chance you missed hearing about the 2012 Earthwing Money Cup (I know I did) but the event was a huge success with a ton of great turnout from New York area riders as well as others, such as John Kruetter, traveling in from far out-of-state to get in on the action. As with any jam in the city it looked like the jam had a great vibe and showcased a lot of gnarly and techy hard-wheel sliding. Other than John keep an eye out for friend of the site Josh Wright as well as Earthwing’s own Steve Kong.

Earthwing and Comet Announce New Boards and Graphics

I gotta say, it’s a great time to be an East Coast skater right now. The scene is alive and well and on the industry side of things the East Coast is right there pushing the limits of the sport and constantly innovating. Two of these companies are Earthwing and Comet Skateboards, both of whom announced brand new boards for the 2012 season and they look sweeeeeeeeet. To start things off let’s go way north to Ithica in Upstate New York where Comet Longboards has just dropped a bomb on the downhill/freeride community.

Comet recently added rider extraordinaire Liam Morgan to their team and his pro-model is already hitting shelves across the country (and is available online). Dubbed the Comet Grease Hammer it’s a smaller version of the insanely popular Grease Shark. 2″ shorter than the Grease Shark the Grease Hammer stands 36″ tall with a wheelbase of 26/27″ depending on which set of holes you use and 9.875″ wide. It’s made of 9-ply maple to make it nice and stiff, although it’ll still give a little flex if you’re a bigger rider and has a 0.5″ rocker to it. The board looks sweet and the graphic is pretty crazy. Check it out over at Comet and peep the video of Liam Morgan shredding in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains to catch a glimpse of the Grease Hammer in action (at the bottom of the post).

Further south, in Brooklyn, Earthwing Skateboards has been hard at work on two new skateboards and graphics for the 2012 season. First off the line for Earthwing this year was their long anticipated drop-deck which has been dubbed the Roadkiller. Rumors and spy pictures have been circulating about this board for a while, but other than a brief appearance in some Earthwing videos not much was known about the deck until its release recently. Designed by Earthwing Team Rider and engineer Adam Auger, the Roadkiller has been designed with a specific purpose in mind: keeping your feet glued to the deck while you’re getting sideways. A deep “W” concave runs between the two drops to create a solid foot pocket that locks you in and prevents your feet from slipping off of the board while you’re pulling hard and fast slides. It’s 40″ long and 10″ wide to give you a nice solid platform to stand on, with a wheelbase of 32.5″. Of course, since it’s a board by Earthwing it’s easy on the pocket too, setting you back only $99 for the deck itself.

Earthwing also announced the other day that the SuperModel for 2012 would be getting a redesign. The SuperModel, which is probably Earthwing’s best known board, has been selected to get both a new graphic (the “Earthwing” image below) and a new shape for this upcoming year. While Earthwing is still being pretty hush-hush about the details they gave us a nice paragraph to worth with. Once again it’s going to feature a deep, elliptical concave that is deeper near the trucks to lock your feet in place more for those big slides. The board is all on one plane, no rocker and no camber — it’s also going to come in both 8 and 9-ply options so you can choose just how stiff you want it to be. Earthwing also said they allowed just a touch of torsional flex to allow you to control slides with more precision and distribute the slide evenly amongst the wheels all the while without sacrificing the stable feeling of the board. With a little bit of digging we also found out that the SuperModel will be offered in a 38″ version as well although we aren’t clear on the details quite yet. Again, since it’s Earthwing you’re only looking at a $99 price point for this super sweet, versatile, and classic board.

UPDATE 11/8/11! Thanks to fellow CT skater and friend Victor Tu I just saw a picture of the new SuperModel that looks like it surfaced about 5 days ago (so I’m a little late to the party on this one). Still felt like I should update the post to give a good look at what the new SuperModel is going to look like.

2011 Broadway Bomb & More — NYC 10/8/11

If you’re even remotely close to the Northeast this is the event that we’ve all been waiting for, the 2011 Broadway Bomb in New York City

on October 8th, 2011. I’m so excited I’m not even sure where to start. The event that saw over 550 skaters last year is expected to draw close to 750 this year. As of this posting there are currently 647 skaters registered and the number is climbing steadily making it a possibility there could be closer to 1,000 skaters total. UPDATE 10/4/11: As of 11:00PM tonight (Tuesday, 10/4) there are officially OVER 1,000 SKATERS REGISTERED FOR THE BROADWAY BOMB! Right now the number stands at 1,046 and doesn’t appear to be slowing down as we get closer to the race. With numbers like that the Broadway Bomb will literally take over the streets of Manhattan for the race — making it an uban longboard paridse. From what the Bustin’ Blog said we’ll skate through 150 traffic lights, 100,000 pedestrians, road blocks, road kill and the good ole police. I guess that’s why the race’s tagline is “YOU COULD DIE!” Both Friday 10/7 and Sunday 10/9 other events are taking place as well as some events right after the race on Saturday.

The 2011 Broadway Bomb Push Race & After parties:

The race is scheduled to go off right at noon (12:00PM) from Riverside Park at 116th and Broadway, the race ends at the bull statue on Wall Street. You can take the 1 train to 116th and get off there. This is *the* push event through the streets of Manhattan. In years past we’ve seen some super fast pushing and some pretty reckless skating through traffic lights and cars. This year there is a no skitching rule to help prevent injury and unwanted negative attention. You can register here for the race. If it’s raining there is a posted rain date for  October 17th. We’ll keep you updated if there’s question as to whether or not the race is on. 

Immediately after the race is the Bomb Ass BBQ at East River Park in Manhattan. The official start time is 2PM, you can skate over with the pack that will most definitely be headed over there or take the JMZF train to Delancey Street — either way you have to walk over the FDR via the pedestrian path

way to enter the park. It’s under the Williamsburg Bridge alongside the East River. This is going to be a great time and will allow for a lot of people to check out the famous Williamsburg Bridge — one of NYC’s best longboard spots.

If you still haven’t had enough there’s also the Bomb Ass Afterparty going down right next to the Longboard Loft at Lucky Jacks 125 Allan Street. Again it’s the JMZF train to Delancey Street.

Friday & Sunday Extended Bomb Sesssions:

So, in addition to the famous push race there are events to start the weekend off and finish it the right way on Friday night and Sunday afternoon (October 7th & 9th)

On Friday the Friday Night Rip Session is going down in Prospect Park, Brooklyn at 7:00PM. It’s a slide and freeride jam and will be sure to have appearances by some of the Earthwing and Bustin’ riders and will be tons of fun for everyone that shows up.

Sunday, for your post-race and after-party enjoyment you have the Sunday Style Sessions going down at 7AM on Dyckman Street in Manhattan. The Style Session is hosted by Uncle Funky’s Board Shop and requires a $20 registration fee (and very early wake-up).
